Organic Knowledge in Action – APD Southeast Europe contributes to strengthening Regional Capacities for Organic Agriculture
As part of the Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD) Germany – South East Europe, multiple initiatives were successfully implemented in 2025 to advance organic farming and strengthen institutional capacities in the region.
In September 2025, three Organic Training Modules were held under the APD project to support inspectors and staff of competent authorities in the effective implementation of the EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848. Each module attracted around 300 active participants from across Southeast Europe. The sessions focused on the transition from the previous regulation, inspection and control procedures, import controls, and best practice examples from EU Member States and candidate countries. The training series was conducted by Farzaneh Mahdipour, Secretary General of the EOCC and Trainer at the IQS Group, together with Toralf Richter (FiBL), Key Expert of the APD. Their joint facilitation ensured a high level of participant interaction and practical relevance. An online knowledge test concluded the series, with certificates awarded to successful participants. The highly positive feedback reflected the growing importance of harmonized implementation of the EU Organic Regulation in the region.
Building on this momentum, the Organic Advanced School, implemented by Sigrid Alexander (trainer) and Toralf Richter (Key expert APD, FIBL), took place in Shkodra, Albania, from 5 to 10 October 2025, bringing together young professionals, farmers, researchers, and representatives of institutions from the Western Balkans and Moldova. Through lectures, group work, and field visits to organic farms and processing facilities, participants deepened their knowledge of organic production, certification standards, and market opportunities. The week concluded with the presentation of project ideas, networking sessions, and the awarding of certificates. The initiative fostered regional dialogue and strengthened future capacities in organic agriculture – contributing to sustainable development and regional cooperation in South Eastern Europe.
